about us

Independent, Physician-Led Heart Care in Florida Since 1997

Florida Heart & Vascular Institute was founded in Ocala in 1997 with one straightforward goal: to give Florida patients direct access to experienced, board-certified cardiologists without the delays that come with large hospital referral systems.

Today, FHVI is one of Florida’s largest independent cardiovascular practices, with 9 clinic locations, 18+ board-certified cardiologists and advanced practice providers, and a comprehensive range of cardiac and vascular services delivered entirely in-house.

Our physicians hold national cardiology certifications — including FACC (Fellow of the American College of Cardiology), FHRS (Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society), and FSCAI — and bring subspecialty expertise in interventional cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, peripheral vascular disease, and cardiovascular surgery.

We treat patients covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most major insurance plans. For uninsured and underinsured patients, we provide compassionate self-pay rates and financial hardship accommodations — because access to cardiac care should never depend on your insurance status.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cardiology Care at FHVI

In most cases, no. Florida Heart & Vascular Institute accepts direct patient appointments without a referral. If your insurance plan requires a referral for specialist visits, check your policy first — but you can also call us at (352) 572-7730 and our team will help you confirm coverage.

Yes. We accept Medicare, Medicaid, and most major commercial insurance plans. For a full list of accepted insurers or to verify your coverage before your appointment, call (352) 572-7730 or visit our Patient Resources page.

Yes, for patients with active or recently resolved cardiac symptoms — including chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeat. Call (352) 572-7730 and request an urgent cardiology evaluation. If your symptoms are severe or ongoing, call 911 immediately.

Your first visit begins with a review of your symptoms, medical history, family history, and current medications. Your cardiologist will then perform a physical examination and may order an EKG, blood work, or additional diagnostic tests. You will receive a clear explanation of findings and a recommended plan before you leave.

A new patient cardiology consultation typically takes 45-60 minutes. If diagnostic tests such as an EKG, echocardiogram, or stress test are performed at the same visit, plan for 2-3 hours.

An interventional cardiologist performs minimally invasive procedures — such as coronary angiography, angioplasty, and stent placement — to treat blocked arteries and coronary artery disease. FHVI’s interventional cardiologists perform these procedures in our own accredited cath lab, without the need for a hospital transfer.

An electrophysiologist is a cardiologist who specialises in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders — including atrial fibrillation (AFib), arrhythmia, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), and conditions requiring pacemaker or ICD implantation. If you have been told you have an irregular heartbeat or heart rhythm problem, an electrophysiologist is the appropriate specialist.

In many cases, yes. FHVI’s peripheral vascular team, led by Dr. Jihad Mustapha, has helped hundreds of patients avoid amputations using minimally invasive limb-salvage procedures. Even if another physician has told you that amputation is unavoidable, we encourage you to call us for a second opinion.

Common reasons to schedule a cardiology evaluation include: chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, palpitations or irregular heartbeat, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, unexplained fatigue or dizziness, or leg pain when walking (which may indicate peripheral artery disease). If in doubt, call us — a brief conversation with our clinical team can help you decide.
